Monash Orchestral Series 2010 Primary information
| Date: |
Saturday May 22, 2010 to Sunday September 19, 2010 |
| Location: |
Robert Blackwood Hall, Clayton campus |
| Description: | Emperor
Saturday 22nd May, 2010, 8pm
Monash Academy Orchestra, Mark Shiell conductor, Ian Munro piano
Beethoven, Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major Op. 73 Emperor, Dvorak, Symphony No. 9 in E minor From the New World.
For our first concert in 2010 we have chosen two of the most popular works in the classical music repertoire. In fact, when ABC FM conducted their Top 100 polls, these two works were each number one respectively in the piano concerto and symphony lists.
Melbourne's Ian Munro has emerged over recent years as one of Australia's most distinguished and awarded musicians, with a career that has taken him to thirty countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia. His award in 2003 of Premier Grand Prix at the Queen Elisabeth International Competition for composers (Belgium) is a unique achievement for an Australian and follows on from multiple prizes in international piano competitions in Spain (Maria Canals), Italy (Busoni), Portugal (Vianna da Motta) and the UK, where his second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1987 established his international profile.
Heroic
Sunday 1st August 2010, 4pm
Monash Academy Orchestra, Jeffrey Crellin conductor, Katherine Taylor violin, Sharon Draper cello, Brahms , Double Concerto for violin and cello in A minor Op 102, Beethoven Symphony No 3 in E flat Op 55 Eroica.
Beethoven's third symphony is considered a milestone in the history of the classical symphony. The work covers more emotional ground than earlier works and is often cited as the beginning of the Romantic period in music. The first movement alone is almost as long as a typical Mozart or Haydn symphony.
Brahms superb Double Concerto is performed by two outstanding young members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Katherine Taylor and Sharon Draper, whose association with the Monash Academy Orchestra as mentors and tutors has been an enriching experience for all.

Lewd and scandalous books Primary information
| Date: |
Monday July 19, 2010 to Thursday September 30, 2010 |
| Location: |
Level 1, ISB Wing, Matheson Library (Building 4), Clayton campus |
| Description: | An exhibition entitled "Lewd and Scandalous Books" is on show at the Sir Louis Matheson Library.
The display features material that was banned in the eighteenth century because it was seen as too erotic or scandalous. It was chosen by Dr Patrick Spedding, of the School of English, Communications and Performance Studies, in the Faculty of Arts, who is undertaking research in the dissemination and control of clandestine writing in England 16951774.
Although the topics are familiar -- the sex-scandals and vices of the rich and famous -- many of the works displayed are unlikely to shock modern visitors.
The exhibition features material from the Rare Books Collection of the Monash University Library, as well as some privately owned items. Many books featured are extremely rare and fragile. The launch of the new exhibition was held to coincide with the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand Conference, "To deprave and corrupt: forbidden, hidden and censored books".

The first study was a collaboration between investigators in the School of Psychology and Psychiatry and the Monash Epworth Research Centre. It set out to investigate the underlying causes of the fatigue and sleep disturbances that commonly follow traumatic brain injury.
The second study was carried out at the Division of Sleep Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, USA.
It examines whether the wake maintenance zone, which is a 2-3 hour window of increased alertness and reduced sleep propensity occurring shortly before habitual bedtime, is associated with improved neurobehavioural performance.
