Upcoming seminar schedule

Monday 6 September
12 to 1 pm

Dr Dorothy Begg
Injury Prevention Research Unit, University of Otago

Dr Dorothy Begg, will be presenting  an overview of her young driver research based on the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study cohort and her current research on newly licensed drivers, the New Zealand Drivers Study.

Dr Dorothy Begg is a Senior Research Fellow and the co-ordinator for road safety research in the Injury Prevention Research Unit, University of Otago. Her undergraduate training was in psychology (Otago) and postgraduate training in public health (MPH at Johns Hopkins and PhD at Otago). Her principal research interest is in road safety, and especially young drivers, but also motorcyclists.  She has undertaken several evaluations of the New Zealand graduated driver licensing system, and also studies of risky driving behaviours among adolescents and young adults.  She is currently the principal investigator on a large prospective cohort study of newly licensed car drivers in New Zealand.
Monday 19 July
12 to 1pm
Dr Lena Nilsson, Director of the National Centre of Excellence ViP (Virtual Prototyping and Assessment by Simulation) at VTI (Sweden) Recent developments from the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI): Human Factors, Simulation, and In-vehicle Technology

The presentation will cover four themes:
1) a general overview of research at VTI;
2) the ViP (Virtual Prototyping and Assessment by Simulation) Centre of Excellence;
3) human factors research (including fatigue, intelligent speed adaptation [ISA], and risk-taking), and
4) vehicle technology and simulation (including vehicle dynamics, simulator technology, and active safety).

Dr Lena Nilsson is the Director of VTI's National Centre of Excellence in Virtual Prototyping and Assessment by Simulation (ViP).  Previously, she was Research Director and head of the ‘Human Vehicle Transport System Interaction' department, also at VTI.   Dr Nilsson holds a PhD in mechanical engineering, and an MSc in applied physics and electrical engineering, and has over 20 years of experience conducting national and international research in the fields of Human Factors in transportation, ITS systems, Assessment methodology, and Simulator applications.  Her current major fields of research include human factors, driver performance, visual demand, cognitive load and acceptance in relation to driver support systems and in-vehicle ITS, design and evaluation of such systems in simulated and real environments, the working environment of professional drivers and the design and safety effects of roadwork zones.  Lena has participated in many European (Prometheus and EC e.g. AC ASSIST, RESPONSE, ADVISORS, HASTE and HUMANIST) and national projects concerning human factors since 1987, and has published extensively in proceedings from international peer-reviewed conferences and journals.

Anna Barker and Jeannette Kamar

Effective falls injury prevention in the acute hospital setting

Dr Anna Barker is a Research fellow at the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in patient Safety in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. She completed her PhD through the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, The University of Queensland. Her thesis investigated current and novel methods for the assessment of fall and fracture risk in residential aged care. Past roles have included working as a senior researcher at the Northern Clinical Research Centre where she led, and was involved in, clinical research projects in the areas of patient safety including in hospital falls, pressure ulcers and risk adjusted mortality monitoring; efficacy of chronic disease programs and development and validation of clinical assessment instruments. Anna's principal interest is in the prevention of fall related harm. She also continues to work clinically as a physiotherapist.

Jeannette Kamar is the injury coordinator for the Northern Hospital. She completed her nursing degree at Melbourne University and graduate certificate at RMIT. She led the development and implementation of the falls prevention program at The Northern Hospital. She has also led several other injury prevention programs at The Northern Hospital including VTE and pressure ulcer prevention.
